By Mia Sultana-Ball, Founder, WiT Leadership Foundation
I started Women in Treasury (WiT) in 2023 because I wanted to build the community I needed myself.
As I advanced in my career, finding allies, mentors, and executives committed to supportive professional relationships became increasingly difficult. I wanted women in treasury to have a place to share their experiences, open doors for one another, and help the next generation succeed.
My advocacy for women began years earlier. In 2015–2016, I created the Park Avenue professional women’s networking group to support women in banking. While serving on the board of the Treasury Management Association of New York (TMANY), I carried that commitment into WiT, creating an initiative to spotlight women treasury executives at the 2024 New York Cash Exchange conference who were eager to mentor and sponsor others.
Turning that idea into a lasting platform took persistence. I advocated for WiT to become a formal committee, served as its chair, and personally funded its work for a year and a half. Securing our first sponsor, TreasurySpring, was a turning point, and I remain deeply grateful for its support.
With a committee in place, we expanded into webinars, roundtables, networking events, and professional and personal development programs. I wanted our programming to prepare women for the future of finance, bringing the platform its first AI event in conjunction with Deloitte and its first Blockchain 101 webinar. I also supported women’s communities across trade finance, treasury, fund finance, private markets, and digital assets.
Along the way, WiT received overwhelming support from the finance community and national recognition from the Association for Financial Professionals (AFP). That encouragement strengthened my resolve to grow the initiative and broaden its reach.
The journey also brought challenges: securing resources, building a committee, earning support for new ideas, and sustaining momentum while balancing leadership responsibilities. Every step was a learning experience. Those lessons now inform both how WiT Leadership Foundation will operate and the principles behind it—from building sustainable programs and clear structures to understanding what makes a community inclusive, supportive, and useful to its members.
My work with WiT grew alongside my service at TMANY, from sponsor and volunteer in 2012 to board member in 2022, Vice President in 2024, and President, Conference Chair, and WiT Committee Chair in 2025 and 2026.
With those terms complete, my focus is on launching WiT Leadership Foundation: a truly inclusive global community for women in treasury and across finance. I am bringing forward everything this journey has taught me to create stronger programs, meaningful relationships, and more opportunities for women at every stage of their careers.
WiT began with my search for support. Its next chapter is about extending that support to women around the world.
